Police Send Homeless Japanese

Overstayer Home

Sydney Homeless had some rather unkind things to say in relation to police today, but that will keep for another time. This is more important. It is in our experience, unique.

Whether accidentally or otherwise, and I hope this doesn’t cause a problem for the only two police officers in recent memory displaying an ounce of decency, but…

A well known and respected Japanese long term member of the Sydney Homeless community was arrested yesterday – he’d overstayed his 3 month visa by a few days (well, ten years,to be exact).

From what I can piece together from the little Japanese I know and the little English he understands (with copious lashings of sign language) is a highly unusual, erstwhile unheard of approach to Illegal Aliens and Homeless people…

Two plain clothes detectives approached him in Hyde Park ( their legal reasons unclear,he is the most unassuming man and not known for attracting attention). At some stage they realised that he was in the country illegally, arranged tickets to Japan, arranged new clothes, new shoes, and sent a very happy, relieved man home.. oh he was allowed to remain free overnight so he could say goodbye to his friends…

We are not certain that the two gentlemen concerned were Police,Immigration, and if police, whether federal or state. But whoever you were, thank you for your considerate approach and provision of a solution for this man. We are not known for thanking or congratulating police, in particular because we usually have no reason to … but there you have it.
